Sparks Lake Fire Aftermath
January in the 2023 calendar

The aftermath of the Sparks Lake fire. A mega-fire that raged during the summer of 2021 and burned nearly 900 square kilometres of second-growth forest northwest of Kamloops, British Columbia.

The wildfire was the largest in over a century in the province and the eleventh largest in Canada’s history.

Spending four days photographing what is now a wasteland was the most emotionally challenging photo journey of my career. Being surrounded by silent desolation, a landscape devoid of colour, was a deeply chilling experience.

It will be at least a century before the forest fully recovers and given how quickly British Columbia’s biosphere is changing as the planet warms, what will return a hundred years from now will not be the same as what was lost a year ago.
